Facebook launches a tool that allows users to share images on Google Photos

Facebook has launched a new photo-sharing tool that allows users to share their Facebook photos directly on to other web-based services freeing users from the hassle of uploading the same image to various services separately.

The social media giant has piloted its new tool in Ireland whereas a part of the testing phase it is allowing users to share their Facebook photos and videos directly on to Google Photos.

The company plans to roll out this tool to its users across the globe in the first half of 2020. If you are a Facebook user living in Ireland, you can access the company's new tool in the Facebook

settings within Your Facebook Information. You can also download your information from the same section of the Facebook app.

Facebook says that it has had discussions with policymakers, regulators, academics, advocates from the UK and Germany to Brazil and about what data should be portable and how can the

the company ensures that the user privacy is protected when enabling data transfers.

"We've kept privacy and security as top priorities, so all data transferred will be encrypted and people will be asked to enter their password before a transfer is initiated," Steve Satterfield,

Director of Privacy and Public Policy at Facebook wrote in a blog post.

As far as the implementation part is concerned, the Menlo Park-based tech giant said that the new tool is based on a code that has been developed through the company's participation in the

open-source Data Transfer Project, which also includes other tech companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Twitter, and Google.

Notably, Facebook's new tool comes at a time when Facebook, just like Google, is being investigated by regulators on both sides of the Atlantic over its data collection practices. Earlier this week

the European Commission opened a preliminary investigation into Google's data collection practices. Soon after, the agency announced that in addition to looking int Google's core businesses, it

was also conducting an investigation into how Facebook collects and monetizes its data. The agency has sent a questionnaire to both the companies as a part of its investigation.
